Mastering Numbers KS1

Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 take part in a daily activity called 'Mastering Numbers' which ultimately supports them to develop good number sense. This includes a  15-minute whole class teaching session each day to enable all pupils to secure firm foundations of number. This daily practice will support all pupils to leave KS1 with fluency in calculation, feeling confident with number and be able to represent amounts flexibly. Through the careful planning and progression, close attention is given to key knowledge that is required for pupils to grasp a deep understanding of number that will support them in the future.

Pupils use resources such as: rekenreks and numberblocks which they have become very familiar with. These resources are important to help the children explore the relationships between numbers and to see the mathematical structure. Most importantly, pupils enjoy Mastering Numbers and show enthusiasm towards their learning.
