Southfields Primary School

Design and Technology

Here at Southfields we value all areas of the curriculum and we believe that DT helps children to prepare for the developing world. The subject encourages children to develop their problem solving skills, as well as their creativity as designers.

In DT at Southfields, we concentrate on  the 2 strands which are Designing & Making and Cooking & Nutrition. Children are encouraged to follow the 'Design, make, evaluate' approach as outlined in the National Curriculum. This means that children can reflect on their products throughout the design process including the appearance and general functionality of their creations.

During DT sessions children are encouraged to ask and answer questions to deepen their understanding of products and design. Lessons and activities are planned to include all children by using a range of questioning and equipment, to facilitate the best outcomes for all.

Collaborative work in DT develops mutual respect for the differing opinions, beliefs and abilities of others. Children develop a respect for the environment, for their own health and safety and that of others. They are taught to appreciate the similarities and differences and learn to give peer reviews that are kind, helpful and specific.
