Our Curriculum
EYFS Curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) starts when children begin Nursery and continues to the end of Reception. It is a hugely important stage of a child’s education.
At Southfields, our Early years curriculum is designed to provide rich and varied experiences that intend to enthuse, engage and motivate children to learn and achieve highly.
Within the Early Years Statutory Framework (EYFS), there are seven areas of learning that shape our curriculum. The areas of learning are broken down into prime and specific areas. The prime areas, are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
They are:
-
Communication and Language
-
Physical Development
-
Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The specific areas then help the child to strengthen and apply the prime areas. The specific areas are:
-
Literacy
-
Mathematics
-
Understanding the World
-
Expressive Arts and Design

Children benefit from meaningful learning experiences across all seven areas of the Early Years curriculum, enabling them to make links in their learning and to the wider world. We aim to create a nurturing, safe and caring community which fosters a strong sense of belonging and self-worth. Through play, exploration, and guided learning, we support each child’s growth and curiosity, helping them build the skills and confidence that lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

At the end of the Reception year, learning is formally assessed against the Early Learning Goals. Please click on the attachment below to read more about the Early Learning goals.
