Welcome to Year 3/4 and the start of a new school year!

We are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead. The whole Year 3/4 team is excited to be teaching and caring for your child throughout the year.

We have a dedicated and enthusiastic team who will continue to work hard to ensure that every child feels happy, valued and supported whilst providing a positive, engaging and safe environment in which they can learn, grow and thrive. The Year 3/4 team is:

Please take some time to read through the information within this Year 3/4 area of the website, which will provide you with an overview of the curriculum your child will be learning, as well as other important information regarding school rules, routines and expectations.

Communication is Key

As a Voice 21 school, our curriculum enables children to develop their communication skills by supporting our view that Communication is Key. This is achieved through books, reading, speaking and listening, debates, and expressive arts; after all, reading is a passport to countless adventures. The curriculum provides children with creative and memorable experiences that build children’s aspirations demonstrating possibilities for their future lives. All of this is underpinned by our key beliefs – believe in yourself, value others, smile, shine, be happy. 

Important information:

Arrival and pick-up times 

Children need to arrive at school ready to start learning at 8:35. Registration closes at 8:45. The children will enter school through the white door on the middle playground where a member of staff will be there to welcome them into school. Your child will then put their belongings in the cloakroom area and make their way to their classrooms. 

Children will be picked up at 3.15 p.m. 

If your child is in Mrs Arnold's class, Miss Macgregor and Mr Alves class or Mrs Marsden's class, please pick up your child from outside their classroom.

Please wait on the middle playground for your child's class teacher to bring the children out onto the playground to be picked up if they are in Miss Tangl's class and Mr Kazimierow's class 

We ask that you arrive at the pick-up time promptly, ready to collect your child.

Uniform:

Children should wear their school uniform for three days a week with suitable black school shoes and their PE kit for two other days. 

PE:             

Mrs Marsden class & Miss Tangl's class: PE is on Wednesday and Thursday

Mrs Arnold's & Mr Kazimierow's class: PE is on Thursday and Friday

Miss Macgregor and Mr Alves class: PE is on Wednesday and Friday

Children must have their hair tied up for PE sessions and no jewellery is allowed in PE for health and safety reasons. If your child wears stud earrings and cannot remove them themselves, we recommend that you remove them before your child comes into school.

Lunch:

If your child has a packed lunch, they can bring it in a named lunch box. All packed lunches will be kept on the school trolley outside the classroom. All lunches, packed lunches, and hot dinners will be eaten in the Dining Hall.

Unlike in KS1, Year 3 (as well as all year groups in KS2) school dinners are to be paid for unless you are entitled to Free School Meals. If your child is having a hot dinner at school this must be booked in advance. Mrs Buck will not be able to book meals on behalf of parents anymore due to Data Protection, therefore you must book your child's meal. If you do not book a meal, then you will need to please provide one and bring it to school. 

Snacks:

If your child would like a snack at break time, this needs to be brought in, unlike in Year 2 where they are given government-funded fruit. This needs to be a healthy snack (fruit or vegetable) and brought in separately from your child’s lunch (if they have a packed lunch too). Please also send your child with a named water bottle.

Home Learning:

We expect children to practise their reading every day and their spellings and multiplication at least four times a week at home. Children will choose a reading book, which is suitable for their reading level, that will go home daily so that they can read at home. They can change this book when they are ready to which will be monitored by staff. They will be given a reading record so that a parent comment can be added and so they can record which pages they have read. The reading book and record must come back to school and into class with them each day.

All books taken home will be logged. If your child has not finished their book that week, they can keep their book the following week and hand it in on the following Friday. 

They will also be given a spelling book where their weekly spellings will be stuck in following a new spelling lesson each week. All children will complete a mini spelling quiz each week based on the spellings that they have learnt.The LCWC spelling book must come into school each day. Your child’s home learning will be monitored.

Consolidation

On a Friday, children will take home an activity sheet to consolidate a core skill in maths, reading or grammar that they have learnt in class that week. This must be returned to their class teacher by the following Thursday.

Creative homework

Children will have the opportunity to be creative and complete a project each half term at home that is related to the topics they are learning.

All of the homework expectations are set out on the homework menu sheet that the children take home at the start of each half term.

Online Resources:

Your child will have a membership to the following sites: Spelling Shed,  Times Table Rockstars and Numbots. We recommend that your child uses their membership given by the school to the best of their advantage by thoroughly exploring these websites at home. These are really amazing and can really help to support and enhance home learning. Children’s login details containing usernames and passwords will be sent home.
